Our cheap, minimally planned Valentines.

We don’t normally celebrate Valentines Day much in our house.  Like, little to none.  For your typical, we’re-too-hip-for-commercialized-holidays type of reasons. (kidding.  mostly.)

But this year Eleven Year Old asked me if we could Valentines party it up, mostly because she’s our only child who spent a couple of years in the public school system and she has memories of making paper bags into Valentines receptacles and stuff.   And also partly because she’s an Eleven Year Old.  Even the tomboy types like her enjoy a good day of candy and everything pink.

Sooo, I decided to acknowledge the holiday as cheaply and with as little effort as I could.  Because I’m lazy.  And cheap.  I’m not that crafty mom, I’m not.  I’m also not much of a planner.  I’m more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-valentines type gal.   And that is what led me to randomly wandering around kroger putting whatever inspired me into my cart last week.

What I ended up with was:

Pink Vitamin water with cups full of clearance Smarties.

(Do you like our Valentines Bouquet?  Eleven Year Old picked them from the yard and put them in a mason jar. Perfecto.)

Kids don't care if presents are cheap.

(Eleven Year Old is pulling a “Gollum” here thanks to our 10 hour Lord of the Rings Marathon yesterday.)

Also, while Eleven Year Old was walking her dog, I decided to pull off something that I had randomly seen on the internet recently ; how to make a heart-shaped boiled egg. It’s one of her favorite foods, and the only way she likes eggs.

Ours didn’t look quite as good as the pinterest photo.  Go figure.

Not a bad effort though.

Eleven Year Old has been asking me lately if she can learn how to bake a cake, so when I saw these pans on my shopping trip, I decided Valentines would be as good a day as any.  I’m going to give her a recipe for making a double layered cake from scratch, plus icing, and let her go.  She learns best that way.

Winning.

I also let Nestle Tollhouse bake us up some pretty cute cookies.

And what, you may ask, am I doing for my own Valentine?   Well, as I mentioned before, we don’t really celebrate this lovely day in a traditional way.  However, I do have a couple of loving things up my sleeve.

For starters, I took out the trash; a truly sacrificial act.  I’m also going to fold all of his socks, the most pure way I know to say I love you.  And I’ll cook him something for dinner, cause he likes that and stuff after coming home from a frustrating day at work.  I don’t even know what I’m going to cook yet.  I’ll figure something out.

I’m a (wo)man with a (no) plan.  Gotta appreciate that.

So, do you have any cheap and lovely moves up your sleeve today?  Do share.

I gave my kids the valentine’s bags that my mom put together for them (because she actually plans ahead and gets creative) and I poured some melted chocolate over chex cereal and M&M’s and put it in baggies for them today.

    That’s how I roll.

I don’t care much, either. :) I’m actually pretty darn impressed with your Valentine’s celebration. Well done, you!

Yeah, once I typed it out it seemed like a lot, but it was really just me randomly walking being lazy, I swear! Lol.

We aren’t tradition Valentine’s folks either. We don’t dress up and go out. I don’t expect chocolates or flowers. We figure our home is filled with Christ’s love and love for each other every day. So, what’s different about Feb 14th. But my sweet dear hubby heard me the other week when we were in Target when I said that I always wanted the big box of Crayola crayons (64 pack) when I was little but, never got them. So this morning I woke up to a card and a huge box of crayons on my night stand. So, the first thing I did this morning is cry. My husband is such a blessing to me.

I’m making a “romantic” breakfast for dinner. Pink pancakes, heart shaped fried eggs, and heart shaped bacon on our good china with candles. It’s the kids favorite meal so I figure hearting it up should be fun

p.s. We’re getting take out (which is a rare treat) and watching The Colony on Netflix. That’s our idea of excitement.

We don’t typically celebrate the Hallmark….err I mean Valentine’s Day either. This year we decided to do a little something to mark the day. I am making Sonoma Chicken Salad – which you can buy at Costco, but my homemade version is said to be much better. (Recipe below) Then we are going to crawl into bed, watch a movie, and get down on some chicken salad and heart shaped mint brownies from the 1 point Weight Watchers brownie recipe I found, add mint flavor. Life is good.

    Sonoma Chicken Salad:
4 (or so) Chicken Breasts, cut into bite size cubes
2 sticks of celery diced small
    1/4 C Pecans, chopped
    1 C dried cranberries

    To make the dressing:
    1 cup mayonnaise
    4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
    5 teaspoons honey
    2 teaspoons poppy seeds
    Salt & Pepper to taste
    Sometimes a dash of sugar

I do and I plan to blog about it later….. I didn’t spend any money, nor did I get any ideas off Pinterest. I covered our table with paper and hubby and I wrote love notes to the girls. He wrote a math puzzle for them and that was our math today. I wrote some Bible verses about love and how to say some “love” phrases in Spanish. Once the girls woke up and saw it, they began writing us messages and drawing pictures. It’s fun.

We went to the local coffee shop and played some violin songs to show our coffee shop friend how much we love her. We made, decorated and delivered cut out cookies to some neighbors.

And for dinner we are having spaghetti….I will make hearts out of cooked spaghetti noodles to decorate each person’s plate. And we’ll probably eat some strawberries and drink something red.

I do get the kids a heart with candy in it. That is usually about it. We took the day off from school, they are getting to play games and watch movies. I will also cook them a special dinner. They requested salisbury steak and mashed potatoes and peas. We do our best to let our kids know we love them all year long. :)

  10. I love holidays. All holidays. Love love love them. So I go a little out of control on days like today, but in a totally homemade, cheap and functional way cause that’s how I roll.

Today we had heart shaped pancakes, strawberries sliced diagonally so they looked like hearts, and heart shaped bacon for breakfast. For lunch we had heart shaped grilled cheese, for snack heart shapped melon kabobs, and for dinner I think I’m gonna do pizza with heart shaped pepperoni. Did I mention I go a little out of control?

I’m gonna put pictures on my blog if you need more ideas for next year.

I made heart shaped quesadillas. The use of heart shaped cookie cutters was about the extent of our Valentine’s around here.

Happy Valentine’s Day! We had a regular day today but made heart-shaped cookies and did crafts yesterday. My mom was able to be here yesterday, so we celebrated a day early!

I’m not a fan of Valentine’s , so DH and I usually get each other a card and leave it at that. But yesterday he got me a nice gift card so I can buy some new jeans- I have lost a fair amount of weight and all of my current jeans are at least a size too big and look ridiculously baggy on me. Sweet man!

Since I am now ‘on the grid’ and have fancy technology and all, I printed the Chad a form valentine card from the interwebs (in front of him…very sneaky, i am), folded it, signed it, and handed it to him with a “here ya go!” heh heh. very romantic. :)
